from Fisherman's Wharf
Despite what San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf has become -- a "mecca for tourists", it is still, indeed a working commercial port. But "how much longer" is the question, because the "powers-that-be" who run the S.F. Port Authority have refused (or can't afford) to make improvements to the docking facilities for the commercial fishermen. Last evening one of the local T.V. stations was interviewing one of our "more crusty" fishermen, and he said that he was thinking of moving his boat to Half Moon Bay or Bodega Bay because for the same price he could get nicer showers, a work dock, and better access to his boat.
determination
I've never had to carry a pig carcass, but evidently, by this fellow's expression, it takes a certain degree of determination...
fly on wildflower
Serendipity is a word that I haven't heard or thought of for a while, but if I remember correctly, senendipity means the discovery of something wonderful quite by accident... And that is what happened in this photo -- I was snapping the wildflower, but the fly came along at just the right time and took the photo to a higher level...

trail, Roy's Redwoods
O.K., everybody, lets get off our butts and go for a hike to the top of the hill at Roy's Redwoods... It's a great cardio-vascular workout, and also a great place to clear one's mind of the meaningless crap of this funky world... See you there...
sunrise, San Pablo Bay
One of the rewards of getting up and getting outside early is getting to see the morning sky.
coastline and birds
The San Mateo County coastline, just north of Bean Hollow; and birds... Sorry for the crooked horizon...

unidentified wildflower
Here is a pretty wildflower whose name I don't know... Anyone know? ...and remember, you don't have to be a member of Blogger to post a reply-comment if you sign in as anonymous.

eroded sandstone
Eroded sandstone at Salt Point... This curious sandstone is found all along the California coastline, but is especially prevalent here at Salt Point on the Sonoma coast, and also at Point Lobos, south of Carmel. Water and wind carves out the weaker portions of the rock, leaving "out of this world" artistic designs, such as these. Want to see more? CLICK for my Salt Point website
Mt. Tam through limbs
This is our beloved Mount Tamalpais as seem through some gnarly pine branches.
G.G. Bridge from below
The Golden Gate Bridge from below... Those beautiful hills are part of the scenic Marin Headlands. The brickwork is part of the roof of Fort Point; a Civil War relic located directly under the bridge on the south side. CLICK to view gallery of 24 Golden Gate Bridge photos

jpg saved as gif
Saving a regular full-scale image as a gif is a technique I like to experiment with. A gif has a limited number of colors, and sometimes (but not always) a photo can take on interesting design interpretations when treated this way. It also can be an easy way to fix an otherwise hopeless image. If you would like to see more of this type of stuff, visit one of my more obscure websites at: http://www.photoarrow.com/big/big002.html
Cataract Canyon falls
About a week ago I was lamenting that I was going to have to wait until next winter to get any good shots of the falls at Cataract Canyon, but then we had a bit of rain and they made an impressive, but temporary recovery. Cataract Canyon is located on the northwest side of Mount Tamalpais, about 10 miles north of San Francisco.
entrance to Golden Gate
This is the funnel of ocean leading into San Francisco's Golden Gate... Upper midpoint in the photo is Pacifica, about 10 miles south of San Francisco. This is where Gaspar de Portolo's expedition actually landed in 1769. Portolo didn't see the "gate", so he and his crew were quite amazed when they hiked over Sweeney Ridge and discovered San Francisco Bay sprawled out below.

Reflection at Alpine Dam. This is one of five dams that make up the Marin County watershed. The centerpiece is Mt. Tamalpais, which seems to be remarkably "full" of water...

Streaming morning light... No batteries needed... Hey folks, now, this is surprisingly simililar to the photo on the May 25 edition of AphotoAday, but the photos were taken on successive days. ( Q.: My idea of success? A.: Being able to go out for a hike on two successive days...)
